The Activator Technique

A device called an activator adjusting instrument is used to manipulate joints in your body, along with your spine. It is used to treat back and neck pain, and sometimes pain in the arms and legs. The instrument is spring-loaded and used to apply low-force jolts to specific parts of the body. This technique is very similar to a traditional spinal manipulation. Spinal manipulation is performed by hand, while the activator technique requires the use of a mechanical instrument.

Benefits of the Activator Technique

There are several reasons why the Activator Technique may be used instead of more traditional techniques. One is that the use of an instrument allows our chiropractors to complete a spinal manipulation much quicker. In the short time the instrument is delivering a jolt to your body, you're less likely to tense up and feel pain than you would when the more traditional method is used. This can help the treatment become more effective.

Another benefit of the Activator Technique is control. The force being applied to your joints or vertebrae can be carefully controlled with an instrument. This helps avoid causing your joints to twist or bend, which could lead to more pain.

The Activator Technique is often used to evaluate the length of a person's legs. For some people, one leg can be longer than the other. When this occurs, it is usually because the pelvis or spine has become misaligned. By performing this technique, our chiropractor can realign your spine and alleviate your pain.

How It Works

During the activator method, patients lie face down on a table. Depending on where your pain is, our chiropractor will start in different areas. For spine problems, the technique starts at the lower back and works up each vertebrae section. Our chiropractor will look for problem areas and test your reflexes to the instrument. By realigning your spine, we can alleviate your pain and balance the rest of your body.
